IMPORTANT
NOTICE CONCERNING THE PARISH CENTRE
“Could
the key holders for parish organisations please ensure that the Centre is
properly locked and that all lights and water boilers are turned off and
windows closed. Where cups,
plates, or glasses are used it would be appreciated if these could be washed
and put back in the appropriate cupboards.
On numerous occasions recently, lights and water boilers have been left
on and dirty dishes left in the expectation that someone else will clean them
and tidy up. Will everyone please
insure that the centre is properly secured and left in the condition in which
it is found.
I
would ask for a little care and consideration when using the Centre.
We realise the problems are only caused by a few, but we would like to
make everyone aware of what has been happening”.

KISIIZI
APPEAL 2009
An appeal to raise €250,000 for Kisiizi Hospital was
launched at the end of January. This
money will provide new operating theatres and also finance the cost of
training a Ugandan surgeon. Over €123,000
has been pledged or donated which is a stunning total and thank you for
your very generous response. If
you haven’t already done so and would like to contribute, donations can be
forwarded to the Rector or to Ian French. To find out more you will find
Appeal leaflets at the back of the church.
Work
has started on site for the new Operating Theatres at Kisiizi hospital in
Uganda
.The four new theatres are being funded by St Pauls parishioners. Two 29metre
trees had to be felled to make way for the new theatres. The trees are now
being logged into planks for use in the hospital.
The
theatre block is on a sloping site so that cut and fill excavation had to be
carried out to provide a level based for the building. This work is now
completed and pits have been excavated, by hand, for the column bases for the
structure. A number of bases have already been concreted and all will be
completed shortly. Soon rising walls will be commenced and the reinforced
columns poured.
90,000
bricks have been ordered from local suppliers. These are cast locally in
moulds, baked in the sun and then fired in stacks fired by charcoal.
Michael
Webb, chairman of the Kisiizi Support Group in St Pauls, visited the hospital
in October to inspect the work and plan for the coming months. He was
accompanied by Dave Stanley, a civil engineer who has worked for contractors P
J Hegarty for the past 30 years. Dave retired on the Friday and flew to
Uganda
with Michael on the Sunday. He
will remain in Kisiizi for 5 weeks to supervise the work while our permanent
site engineer, David Barrett is home on leave.
Michael
was very impressed with the progress that has been made over the past month
since work started on site. “It is great to see work on site at last and to
see it all going so well under David |Barrett’s leadership.
While
in Kisiizi Michael met the hospital management board who expressed their
appreciation to the parishioners of St Pauls for their very generous support
to the hospital over so many years and particularly for the fantastic amount
raised for the Operating Theatres.
In
Kampala Michael met the Irish ambassador, H.E. Kevin Kelly who expressed his
support for the work but was unable to promise any financial support because
of the cut backs in the Irish Aid programme.
In
parallel with the construction of the new theatres St Pauls have agreed to
fund the training of an additional Ugandan surgeon to work in the hospital.
The hospital Board have selected Dr Robert Mugarura to undergo training as a
surgeon. Dr Robert completed 5 years training as a doctor in
Mbarara
University
and has been working in Kisiizi hospital for the past two years. His three
year surgeon training will commence in August 2010 at
Mbarara
University
. St Pauls have promised to provide €11,000 per year for his training and
support while in university.
